You asked interesting questions which,  I am sure,  are on minds of many
ATMers.
I am afraid that we shall have, on the list,  many theoretical answers,
educated guesses, but little or no practical first hand experiences.
The proper think to do will be to realize such project in an ATM club
workshop under leadership of experienced mirror maker and tester
and publish the results.

Except if all this has been already done and the whole idea dismissed on the
ground of the hard facts.
