You can try cutting the negative of the star lap pattern you want out of waxed paper or
thin plastic.  Then lay the negative on the lap, put the mirror on top and let it press
in.  Warm pressing will speed things up.  After pressing, pull the paper or plastic off
carefully, cold press a while more, then start your figuring session.  This way, you only
depress the lap surface a few thousandths of an inch, and can get back to full contact
with another warm pressing.
