Subject: Announcement - Mid-Atlantic Mirror Making
Second Annual Mid-Atlantic Mirror Making Seminar
The Delmarva Star Gazers announce the second Mid-Atlantic Mirror Making
Seminar. The Seminar will be held March 1-3, 2002, in Mallard Lodge,
Smyrna, DE. Mirror makers should check into the Lodge before 11:00 AM -
mirror making begins at Noon, March 1st.
Activities will include - but not be limited to - the following:
Prominence Scope Making: this year, we will offer a kit and supervision to
assemble your own dedicated solar prominence scope. The scope is based
around a 60mm refractor, occults the sun's disk and produces images of
solar prominences. All materials and tools for assembling the scope will
be provided along with supervision from the developer, David Groski. The
number of prom scope makers is limited to 20.
Camera Hacking: Douglas Miller will assist those wishing to understand the
basics of hacking a webcam for astro photography. Participants should
bring a webcam and their computer to be used for controlling the camera.
There is no participant limit for Camera Hacking activities.
Mirror Making: the purpose of the Seminar is to introduce proven successful
mirror making techniques and practices to those wishing to make their own
mirrors; special emphasis will be placed on successfully figuring the
mirror. All mirror grinding materials will be furnished and expert mirror
makers will be available to guide the activities. For those who have not
made a mirror previously, we suggest beginning with a 6 inch F-8 or 8 inch
F-6. Those with previous mirror making experience are encouraged to go for
the 10 inch F-6. The mirror and tool will have a diamond pre-generated
curve - ready for 220 grit. Successful mirror makers will leave the
Seminar with a fine-figured mirror, ready for aluminizing, and with the
skills, knowledge and confidence to repeat the process as desired.
Mirror grinding, polishing, figuring and testing assistance will be
provided by Steve and Bruce Swayze of Swayze Optical and several
experienced mirror makers from Delmarva Star Gazers .
Mirror making stations will be limited to 12 on a first come, first served
basis. Non-mirror makers are encouraged to attend - to watch the process,
to learn, and to participate in other planned activities.
Although our purpose is to make each mirror grinder successful, and indeed,
each mirror grinder will have the materials, guidance, and time to produce
a quality mirror, there is no guarantee of results.
Mallard Lodge can comfortably accommodate 35 people overnight; sleeping
rooms and bunks are dormitory style with common facilities. We can
accommodate ladies and gentlemen due to the multi-floor and multi-room
layout. Please be aware this is a hunting lodge - not the Hilton. You
will need a sleeping bag and your own bath accessories. Accommodations
are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Breakfast is available
at the nearby Smyrna Diner. All other meals, as well as coffee, tea, and
sodas, will be provided by Delmarva Star Gazers.
Other activities will include:
bring your favorite mirror for testing and evaluation
demonstrations (such as making pitch laps, mirror cells, spiders,
finder scope brackets, mirror test stands, foucault testers, couder
masks, etc),
swap meets,
using the Star Gazers' Meade 10 inch LX200 with SBIG STV camera
equipment,
trips to Bombay Hook Refuge to watch the daily return of feeding
geese
other activities will be added as appropriate
Registration: all mirror makers and prom scope makers are asked to
register by Dec 1, 2001, to provide sufficient lead time for ordering
supplies. Full payment must accompany the registration. There will be no
refunds but substitutions are O.K.
Other attendees may register by January 15, 2002. However, we suggest you
register early because Mallard Lodge can accommodate only about 50 people.
Mallard Lodge is located in the coastal marsh east of Smyrna, DE. It was
originally a waterfowl hunting lodge and is now a State run Aquatic
Education Center. It borders the Woodland Beach Wildlife Area and Bombay
Hook Refuge. This is a prime area for Atlantic flyway migratory waterfowl
- hundreds of thousands of Canada and snow geese winter here each year.
This should be a wonderful early Spring-time weekend in a very interesting
environment and in the company of amateur astronomers learning how to "push
glass".
Come and join us - we look forward to your company. Contact Lyle Jones,
