Re: ATM "frozen" liquid mirrors
Peter:
I certainly am interested! I have thought about it quite a bit and have
even experimented a little, but have many questions.
I suppose the most fundamental is how smooth a surface is obtainable.
The first (and perhaps most instructive) experiment I did was to pu ta dish
of water on my turntable. I realized that if there was some way to preserve
this surface I'd be ready for coating. I also realized that it would be hard
to polish without screwing up the figure, and that if I did any grinding I'd
end up turning the thing into a sphere.
So: is there really a way to end up with a surface that is ready to
coat, or are we looking for a surface that can be prepared for coating while
maintaining the figure, or what?
I'm not sure if this thread is of general enough interest for the group,
or should go private e-mail, but it sure interests me!
Thanks,
Peter Augello
