My tube is considerably longer (96"), but I did it basically the same way. 
 Since you're having similar results with the paint still coming off 
slightly, I guess it's possible that it's a side effect of the paint.

It makes me a bit nervous!  If I go through the pain and effort of grinding 
that mirror, I'd hate to see it messed up by the paint dusting off onto the 
surface.  The idea of an overcoat of some kind might work, but I suspect it 
will add a gloss to the surface :-(
