Was this posted to the list? I've been looking back through my mailboxes,
but seem to have missed this posting, and I'm looking for a source of
worms and gears, and/or slow motors (preferably DC).
I had this silly idea that I'd throw together a last-minute equatorial
camera platform for Hale-Bopp (I was going to do a barn door, but it
seems to me that it should be just as easy to make a tangent-arm which
drives one arm of my tripod's panhead directly) but now I can't find
any local source of motors slower than 2RPM (while the geometry of my
intended setup needs about .5 RPM) and I also haven't been able to find a
place which sells gears. Where does one buy this sort of equipment? Is
that why everyone is using stepper motors (I'd been wondering about that,
since it seems so much more complicated) -- because it's hard to find
non-stepper motors that slow?
I found a wonderful surplus place in San Jose loaded to the rafters with
motors, gears, lenses, and zillions of other neat doohickeys, but the
two things they don't have are slow non-stepper motors (or maybe they do
-- none of their motors are labelled as to RPM, so who knows?) and worm
gears.
