Re: [ATM] Argh! How do I fix this?

All of this is opinion, of course.

Those are small, probably not .01" deep if there is no subsurface fracture.
If there is it looks as if it would be right at the very edge. The
clamshells will develop TDE in polishing and that will more than double
their effective size but that is still small.

It would be ok to ignore them, or if you don't mind just a little extra work
you could remove them in a fairly short period of time. You could do that
either by going to 220 grit or prolonged work with 30 or 25 micron or what
ever similar size grit you use in that range. I don't think that would take
so long working TOT. If I were doing it I would start with 30 micron or
equivilent and see how fast it shrinks. If it looks to be taking longer than
you would like then go to 220 or so grit. Take into account if you start
with 220 it will remove the chips quicker but then you have to clean up and
work the 30 micron. If 30 micron takes it out you are ready to go to finer
grit right as soon as you decide the chips are gone.

That does not look like you dinged something into the edge. It would have
had to bounce along the edge to make the multiple clamshells. Not
impossible, I suppose. It looks as if it could be rocking and rolling the
tool on the edge slightly in separating the disks.

If it were me, I think I would do the extra work and remove them. But it is
mostly cosmetic.

Subject: [ATM] Argh! How do I fix this?

I started the 9 micron WAO today. After 2 wets the mirror surface has
already changed significantly. I washed it and let it sit for an
hour. Then I found a chipped area near the edge. I must have banged it on
the tool but don't remember doing it.

My finger nail catches in the dings. I am guessing that I would have to go
back to 80 or 120 to take it out. Not something that I want to do so I am
guessing that it will get masked out or ignored.

The photo is at:
http://www.nieuport11.com/img/ PICT0004.jpg shows the damage.

Questions:
1) Should I do something to prevent stress risers? What?
2) Is it a bad idea to ignore it?
3) Will I have problems polishing if I do ignore it?

Dave
