Dominic, you've seen the system that I use in Escondido.  A
simple cheap security camera  of the little one inch cube camera
type with a different lens on it than what it came with and you
saw that it works well.
Brightness on the webcams comes from the software used and can
often be set to some value and not changed.  The contrast is
always basically fixed and is of little concern as long as the
brightneess is up to where the returned light is bright enough as
you can always dim the room lighting to bring the background down
to black.  I wish that there was a way of controlling the
brightness  so that the room lights didn't have to e dimmed with
the TV cameras. tho.
Webcams do allow for the easy capture of the images so that they
may be processed with vvarious pieces of software that youbeen
done which can be a blessing for some.  The light coming back to
the camera is amazingly bright for the job and the LED that I'm
using, which is a medium output green LED is more than bright
enough for some mirrors that I've tested.  The led is probably
running at about 5ma so it isn't even running that bright!
