Yep, the optics people were making accurate surfaces to the
micron level back a hyundred and fifty years ago when the
machinists were using tools that would be happy with a 1/32 of an
inch!    Repeatability of parts was such that it was a big
amazing feat when Colt showed a gun off that could be built and
parts swapped out with another gun without doing any fitting work
to get the bun to work/!
