When I explain how to make a mirror to my friends they
marvel about how anyone can make a surface that
accuractly with inexpensive tools.

I counter that what is realy amazing is that one can
measure the surface to the accuracy required with
stuff you can buy from any hardware store for less the
$10.

Keep that in mind when you are thinking about building
a foucault tester.  They are simple devices and need
very little precision to be able to measure a million
times smaller than their precision.
