Sevral problems with a laser for the Foucault tester.
1. The laser needs to hav additional optics to spread the beam
out.
2. The beam is way too bright and the returned reflection, which
will be about four percent of the light source, will be way too
bright to get good readings.
3.j The lasers are unable to be throttled down like LEDs can be
and any overcurrent at all will kill the laser diode. A LED
often takes the momentary overload without blowing and is a lot
cheaper to replace than a laser diode would be.
Leave the lasers to the interfrometry people as they need that
much light to do their work as well as the single frequency that
a laser produces./
