I'd go back and do some paper cutting and do a mask for each zone
for a start. It could be that your eye is being distracted by
all of the zones being visible at one time and you don't have the
figure that you think you have.
If the edge zone is what you think that it really is, pull the
mask off and see what the image looks like. My bet is that
you've got an error in reading the outer zones, looking at one
zone hole on one side and another zone hale on the other side of
the mask.
I'll note that even with just the odd zones on one mask and even
zones on the other mask, I sometimes get misdirected for where
the shadows are. Also note that often the edge zone needs to be
more read as where the crossover of the light/dark areas are.
