Daniel Malacara Ph.D. wrote a book called Optical Shop Testing which is 
truly a fascinating work. It puts forth in great detail both the theory and 
the mechanics behind various methods to test optics. The book is not 
inexpensive, but it is worth every penny if you have the resources to obtain 
it.
