I have found that holding a HSS bit with firm constant pressure against the
grinding wheel is best for a smooth surface finish. If not holding with
enough pressure against the grinding wheel, then the HSS bit can bounce and
not grind smoothly. Usually the HSS bit get pretty hot when holding with
firm constant pressure and I found it is best to mount the bit in a tool
holder or wear gloves. Also I like white vitrified Aluminum Oxide grinding
wheels for HSS. Vitrified AlO wheels cut best after dressed with a diamond
to expose new AlO crystal facets. YMMV
