Re: [ATM] Another machining question, please
Yes, you can use a forstner bit on aluminum, just keep it well lubricated with oil and go slowly,
or...
You can use a COUNTERBORE which is designed for the metalworking job. See:
http://cgi.ebay.com/AIRCRAFT-Counterbore-15-16-x-3-16-NEW-in-BOX-32-67valu_W0QQitemZ190082145190QQihZ009QQcategoryZ12578QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
for one item of this type. With this one, you will need to put in a 3/16 pilot drill or bushing to accurately align the hole but if the workpiece is clamped down well enough and the drill press is robust enough, you can sometimes do without the center drill/bushing...
I recommend this not be done unless you would class the job an "emergency" and not make a regular practice of using a counterbore this way.

I want to have 3 flat bottom holes ~ 3/4 to 7/8 inch in 6061 Aluminum. I
don't have access to a lathe
or mill, but do have a benchtop drill press.Could I drill the holes to
depth with common metal drill bits
and then run a Forstner bit down after it? All I really need flat is a 3/16
inch lip for a nut to rest on. I would
assume this would ruin the Forstner bit...
Since I'm effectively "homebound now" due to medical issues, taking it
locally to a machine shop or
shipping it anywhere isn't going to work.
