Re: [ATM] ATM pronuciation
Howdy,
'Hough-', I imagine, should be said "Haw", as in 'Broughton', or maybe
"How" ('How ya do'n?') or maybe even "Ho", like the garden tool (or
whatever else you were thinking).
I doubt there's any argument over the last syllable, '-ton', other than
regional-dialect related inflections:
A sampling of examples from my neck of the woods:
"Haughton":
"Hah-tayen"
<edjumacated Southerner, said between sips of (Very sweet) tea>,
"Haw'un"
<un-edjumacated Southerner, said with piece of straw in mouth>,
<or "Huge-ton" by an even less enlightened person, one who has trouble
not choking the straw occasionally>
"Ha-tarn"
<Appalachian Southerner, a.k.a. 'Mountain Folk'>,
Or sometimes, when in town, you might get:
"Hair'tern"
<which would be from one of them newfangled, know-it-all,
relocated/retired 'damned Yankee' "new Southerners"...><originally from
Boston>
Now, not to complain, but we've got enough of you fellers from up North
down here now. Y'all need to quit griping 'bout how things were so much
better up North... If things were so good back home, why'd you leave?
Did the rest of 'em kick you out because you were so cantankerous and
ornery? Were you banned and can't go back?
;-)
'Jim-Bob' <James>
Raleigh, NC,
Southern US
(a local native, but university educated - 'pie are square' and not
round, and all that other nonsense)
(personally, I'd guess "Hoe ten". If it was "hAugh-", I'd say
"Haw-ton", but it's hOugh-... I'd go with 'Hoe' - not 'haw' or 'how'.
And the emphasis seems to be on the first syllable, so I'd go with a
subtle '-ten', not the stronger '-ton'.)
(anyone else notice that 'pronunciation' is spelled wrong in the title?
:-)
enjoy.
