I can't speak for the new American routers but my Black and Decker model
7620 commercial heavy duty router has all the attributes you mentioned;
toggle switch on body, 1HP motor with very constant speed at 22K rpm, and
removable handles. Also the self contained machine ground round motor body
unit can be easily detached from the router base. All of these features make
it more adaptable to use on a router table or mounted in a power plane
attachment.. It would be easy to adapt the router motor body to make a lathe
tool post grinder. The date on the Router Manual is 1975 so this router is
probably not typical of a "Modern" American router. The B&D #7620 is a very
good tool BTW.
