Re: [ATM] contaminated pitch
Fabio...
Any contaminate on the surface of the lap will press down to the level of the lap and be there to scratch the surface. You can try bringing the pitch up to just below the boiling point and let the contaminates settle but the viscosity is so high that only the largest will settle.
Do you know what size contamination you have? You can try to filter the pitch through folded "cheesecloth" to remove most of the larger contaminates or you can use the pitch as-is to make the lap base and then paint on a thin layer of NEW PITCH on top of the base to polish against.
Only the surface of the lap is going to contact the glass so that is the part that needs to be without contaminates.

Dear colleagues,
my pitch is probably contaminated with some grain of carborundum. Have I to
throw away it or can I use it to polish a mirror? Don't the grains go deep
in the pitch while polishing? Or will they scratch the mirror surface?
