Just an update... I'm working on a test setup where I can prove to
myself whether or not the line counting trick works. What I'm
concerned about is aberrations that act like defocus on one part of of
the optic (say, the inner part), but not the outer. My current
approach is to start with a wavefront map, find the inner and outer
zones by Foucault simulation, calculate what I think the Ronchi line
differential should be, generate various Ronchi images, and check
whether the line differential agrees or disagrees. I will probably
also try to write something that can do the center zone extraplolation
automatically, since that is a bit error-prone. I don't see how to
automatically count the fringes across the whole diameter very
accurately.
