Hi Mel,

You are right, Roddier (husband and wife) are a renowned couple of 
french astronomers. They have worked, or still work, frequently at
Hawaii.

Now, going on to thin ice, I think the page referred there applies the
principle but is not directly originated by Roddier him/themselves.
The principle being that the images are a Fourier transfroms of the
mirror's shape with some dependency on the offset w.r.t. focus...
thus in principle again two images should suffice to isolate the 
mirror's shape (or, rather, aberrations w.r.t. the spherical wavefront).
Yesterday I have tried to recontact the authors of the site, but no
answer so far.
