I have a guess about Dale's cell, but don't know how to prove it, yet.

Note that one of the bars is vertical along the right side. When the
cell is tilted (say, 45 degrees from horizontal) this bar and
triangles does not balance. Dale measured something like two ounces
of pressure were needed to push the center of the upper triangle into
place. This causes 2 oz. of extra pressure on the top triangle and 2
oz. of reduced pressure on the lower triangle. Dale did a set of
interferograms with his mirror support and the tape "edge" support,
which showed a persistent 45 degree astigmatism that could be
explained by the unbalanced bar.
I'm wondering if anyone can figure out how to model this in PLOP. It
would be nice to confirm if the unbalanced beam could cause this much
astigmatism.
