The secret is temperature and moisture control, more so than polishing
compound. We humans have a tendency to focus on the obvious (polishing
compound) and gloss over the true forces involved. Really, professional
quality cerium oxide diluted (ideally milled) will work nearly as well
without any of the mess. You will have to create a work space that you can
stabilize temperature and relative humidity.
