  Your description of trying to buy 20 gallons of “turps” reminds me of the drugstore scene out of the movie “Spun” http://www.spunthemovie.com/spun/main.html where a spun up tweaker is buying all the  cold medication (pseudoephedrine pills) he possibly can.  Perhaps the source of  paranoia about men in dark coats? Were you out by the Salton Sea at the time?  No wonder you can't put this thread to bed :-)
