As I understand it, Quartz is natural (mono)crystal form of SiO2(Silicon
dioxide).
(From the German "quarz", of uncertain origin. )
Fused silica is melted SiO2, probably initially purified and solidified like
glass
(amorphous) in various shapes (some sold to ATMs for horrendous prices,
according to
recent postings and Bofors quotation ).
