Thanks for the tips.
After carefully examining the QuikFinder and the tube I realise that
there must have been some mechanical force involved, since the tape is
still securely fastened to both the base and the tube.
I'm going to clean up the residue as you describe, then re-do it with
double-sided tape from the hardware store. It comes in different
grades, apparently -- I'll use a high-strenght grade. In the past I
used goof-off for surface prep. It removes the residue of the old
tape very well, but perhaps it isn't the best for prepping a new
surface.
