Dale,

what may help is linear bearings - use the cylindrical pegs but make them 
roll freely in the direction parallel to the mirror's optical axis (one way 
might be supporting each peg with 4 ball bearings much as the drawtube of a 
Crayford focuser). This would compensate for the edge not being even and/or 
cylindrical, but not for the offset from the COG - but would any support?
