Re: [ATM] data and musings on thin mirror

Well, it souns strong to me. If it is "too insulting" depends on where
you put "ceneter of gravity" for this thread.

According to different reports on (questionable) quality of mirrors made by
commercial telescope makers which are certainly experienced
if not talented , this particular case of thin mirror from an amateur is not
so much extraordinary.

What this case revealed is problem of support. At figuring and polishing
stage and at testing stage. This thread produced, thanks to Dale and
Stephen,
some interesting and useful results which can be used by others in the
future.
Support problems have been not investigated much, at least not on this list.
And certainly not as much as required when very thin mirrors are attempted.

>Do you suppose there are other lessons for this mirror maker or
>mirror makers in general?

If this thread will add some real substance to the usual scaring of people
from attempting thin mirrors, it was productive and, who knows, may
eventually assist in finding better techniques.

In some peculiar way this "catastrophic!" mirror produced most useful
results, something that lot of very good exemplars did not. And this was
possible because two good souls found the cup half full, not half empty.

Regards
Vladimir.
