I agree with all your points, so much in fact, here's a picture showing one of 
the 6 point cell setups on my 16" Bino.

I'm currently working on a PIC / Stepper system, so I can do Collimation from 
the eyepiece, as well as possibly use the collimation system as a fine 
moto-focus idea.

After that, while the 6 point setup seems to work, I'm going to try an 18 point 
setup to see if I can tell any difference..
