Well, if the issue is simply putting two transmission pieces together,
I suspect the airgap might be a problem due to refraction and reflection
at the two interfaces. I believe the issue here was one of fusing, as
per the term "glueing" in the original post. In my mind, this implies
bonds of some sort. I could envision a very thin layer of water.
