If you polish two pieces of plate glass together, wash them thoroughly and
let them dry clamped together, they will be very difficult, if not
impossible, to pull apart without breaking. Has anyone tried or know this to
not work by critical inspection?

I wonder if this is an effect similar to the wringing of gage blocks where
extremely flat surfaces will adhear to each other. see Wringability in
http://www.starrett.com/pages/72_wringability.cfm Only gage blocks will
wring without any liquid between them.
