It's called a Differential Thread and utilises the difference
between two threads with different but close pitch. For example,
a 0.5mm picth and a 0.6mm pitch can be used together to produce
a 0.1mm effective pitch, or 36TPI and 40TPI can produce a 360TPI
effective thread.
There's a useful piece of software here to calculate it for you.
Actually, Marv's site has a load of useful, simple programs.
