[ATM] Off Topic Viewing sun with polarized material

Hi all sorry for the off topic question but I thought this might be the place 
to ask this question.

I have obtained a Davis instruments sextant. The cheap plastic practice one 
with no optics.

This uses colored plastic filters for viewing the sun. The ones over the 
eyepiece have been snapped off. I have thought about taking the polarized 
lenses out of sunglasses and placing them in front of each other rotated for 
maximum loss of light. Would this be safe for viewing the sun?
