Bee's wax doesn't flow like pitch does.  If you make a "candle" shaped
piece of pitch and let it stand, it will gradually flow down into a lump,
no matter how hard the pitch.  A bee's wax candle will retain its shape
under the same condition.  Yes, you can polish with a bee's wax lap, I've
done it, but it's hell to control.  If you can get a copy of the old
"Amatuer Telescope Making - Book 1", read Everest's short chapter on the
HCF Lap.
