[ATM] Glass for flats

Hi gang,
  I'm putting together a simple grinding/polishing machine and am going
to try my hand at making some flats.  I have made many mirrors and a
refractor doublet in the past.  My question is, If I want to make a 4"
inch flat for general purpose use, need I use Pyrex or can I get away
with plate glass.  If so, how thick would you recommend.
 I know about the temperature problems of plate vs Pyrex, so I guess I'm
asking your opinion if I would be just wasting my time with plate.  The
main thing driving the question is I am trying to save a little money.
Having been laid off from my teaching job just before Christmas, I'm
trying to occupy some time on a budget.  ;)
