RE: [ATM] Mirror size
Hi Charles WTG on the 6 inch. As far as the size of your next project. I'd
go with what the other guys said, but I dont agree with the advice you got
that suggested that larger apertures will be of little benefit to you.
Larger apertures will always yield benefits no matter what. You will see an
increase in your light grasp and resolving power. Yes it may be true that
as well as collecting more light from astro objects , you are also
collecting more light pollution photons! That said a bigger scope will
always give you more satisfying results as long as that scope doesnt come at
the cost of being too unwieldy to setup or use or too difficult to build.
My advice build own the largest size which is practical for your own set of
circumstances.
Good luck with it.
Dave.

Subject: [ATM] Mirror size
Well, I have finished my 6" mirror and scope, it is working great but that
was just a starter mirror. I wanted to make a good 16" mirror, but, I heard
due to my location that nothing really over a 14 inch will yield much more
quality in viewing. I live 25 miles north of boston, needless to say I do
have some light polution. to give you an example. I can see the Orion Neb
with the naked eye. and I can see 5-6 of the 7 sisters. I am looking for
suggestions, should I shoot for the 16" or drop to a 14 or 12. any help or
advise would be great.
kind regards
Charles, wilmington MA
