[ATM] Pit Stop (Pun) - Newbie needs advice.
Dave,
Short answer? you could probably move on. but....
Why not learn some skills while you're here? You'll need it anyway.
Whatever you are using to look at the pits-a small microscope, a loupe,
an eyepiece-take a few of those 120 grains and nudge them next to one of
your pits. Is the pit about the same size, or very much bigger? If
about the same size-move on. but wait.....
If you don't already have one-go buy a marker called a "sharpie". Now
dab those miscreant pits with the marker and do a short wet. Did the marks
disappear? Yes-move on. No?-well now, aren't you glad you waited? If you're
out of 120 grit, you can probably get them in 180 grit, but you'll have to
work a little smarter.
Don't get rid of the sharpie. You'll want it after a couple wets of 180.
BTW, get a notepad or keep track of what you're doing on the 'puter.
It's a good habit to get into now, and it'll become REAL important later.

Hi All, I'm new to this group and really enjoying reading all of the
fascinating threads.
I'm currently working on making my own 8inch f/6 mirror. I've done the
rough grinding with #80carbo and am now working with 120 Alox using the
'normal' stroke described by texereau. Problem is this. I've almost used
up all of the 120alox that came with my kit yet despite this I can still
see
lots of pits larger than the average. I've done about 20 wets. My
question
is this, should I move on and forget about these as they'll probably get
removed as I work with the finer grades or should I persist until every
last
one of these larger pits is gone?
I assume the effect of a couple of pits on the final mirror will be
negligable anyway?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Regards,
Dave Grennan
