Might as well take a trip to the McDonald Observatory in west Texas and see
the bullet holes in one of the scopes there.  They just painted them with
black paint and are still using the scope.
Any gluing operation needs to be done with a superclean surfaces as any
moisture or oils (especially fingerprint oils!) will weaken the joint
severly and sometimes will even cause the joint to never be made.
In addition, you also need to look at the stresses that can be built up by
gluing glass and metal or wood together as these stresses will cause the
cracking of hard stiff glues, epoxies and so forth.
