That is usually the best way to do so.  I've been forced to fluidize the
grits by an edict of the place that I spend several years at so as to keep
the dust down.  As a result, I've been using the fancy water bottles with
the popup tops for grit spreading.  The grit is mixed with about an equal
volume of water and the result, when mixed up, ends up spreading itself
about the mirror fairly well with a spot of about 1.5" in diameter for a 8"
mirror which gets a quick spread with the fingers before putting the mirror
down on the tool.
