Then you need a separate system of edge supports. The (elusive) goal is to 
simplify the design by providing one set of supports. BTW, RTV pads would not 
be very good, as they would have lots of friction against the back of the 
mirror, inducing stress - that's why non-attached pads are typically slippery 
material.
