Tom,
The mirror is entirely supported by the RTV so it is not a flotation support design. The plate is about 12 or 14 gauge steel. It is very stiff and made more so by about 1/2" being bent down at a 90. You can also see that in the picture near where the unpainted lead weights are located. In the three years of use, I have not seen any signs that the mirror is being stressed because of the RTV. I have to tell you there were several in the club who were skeptical of the mounting method, and even though none have decided to use the method, they have come to see for themselves that it doesn't have any bad effects on the mirror. Some of my friend even mentioned that if I wanted to build an equatorial mount, split ring or fork, I wouldn't have to worry about the mirror falling out because it doesn't use a sling for support. :-)
