Shane,
How flat is it now? Is it Pyrex or plate? My point is, if the blank is flat,
like a glass tabletop, and is free of gross wedge (variation in thickness),
then you do not need to alter that. If it is rippled, or otherwise not flat,
then grind it flat. It is not necesary to have a polish on the back but it
does need to be flat or you will have support issues to deal with.
