[ATM] Dew shield.

Hello all fellow astronomolisationismalists (and scope makers).
I have a few questions about dew shields as I cannot find info on them.
1/ How does a dew sheild work?
2/ What is the best material to make it from?
3/ Is is only useful for scopes with large amounts of glass at the top
end or can a newtonian benefit from one?
4/ Is it also supposed to help prevent heat from the observer crossing the
optical path?
5/ Does it do the same job as heat rope?
Any answers much appreciated.
Thanks,

Cloudy, wet, rainy, low pressure, jet stream right above my head 256 days a
year,
more neon, argon, sodium and xenon light pollution than the whole of a
galaxy whose inhabitants love artificial light put together, and if I get
good seeing it means that polaris only looks like a jellyfish as opposed to
an octopus on bad nights. The Enkle gap is just a myth.
