Here is an excellent online resource on wood and its properties, the
U.S. Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook:

This is "everything you always wanted to know about wood", including the
physical properties and mechanical characteristics that are important to
ATMs.  It has lots of tables and detailed information about all the
common and many exotic softwood and hardwood species.
