I did exactly what you are asking about. I shortened the length of my 8" f8 
Newport Glass Works Pyrex blank by using only about 1/4 of the 220 grit that 
was provided to f6.6 I would recommend that you leave the blank at f8 since 
they are nearly perfect mating surfaces and then use a light shield on the 
end of the tube.
