        It could work, but in practice you don't get rid of all the 
pits, because you always introduce a few new ones due to unavoidable 
grit inconsistency. So when do you stop?

        I used to drive myself absolutely batty with checking the 
surface of the mirror for pits, trying to come up with the best way 
of being sure I looked over every square inch of the darn thing. 
Finally, I decided that I was spending a lot more time checking the 
mirror than grinding it (echo's of "grind more, worry less" can start 
now) So I needed to find an alternative.

        So instead of doing a few wets, then checking the results, I 
did roughly twice the number of wets normally called for, then 
checked the mirror for gross problems before switching to the next 
grit. This method has worked wonderfully for me. It might be a little 
heretical, but it works.
