If the source were EXTREMELY narrow then the the ray from one zone would be
on the knife,while the next zone would be off. At least if diffraction effects
were negligible. The classic bowl would be flat but deep.Transition from light
to dark would be instantaneous.Perhaps we could say the image had high
acuteness. AS the source broadens then the transition from light to dark also
broadens.The source now looks like a series of narrow slits sitting side by
side each with a slightly different transition zone.The bowl is just as deep
but the edge gets blurred. Finally if the source becomes too large the blurr
will completely fill the bowl and the contrast will go down. The bowl becomes
shallower at this point. Anyone agree or disagree? Throw in diffraction
effects, physiological effects?
