ATM Re: Consider the SkyBeam Stopped!

Woohoo! This received as personal e-mail, I don't know if it will be posted
by the other recipients or not.

This looks like very good news for astronomers if they stick to
their agenda:

(text posted from attachment sent by Seattle Historic Preservation Board)

We are writing to you as someone who has expressed an interest in the
application submitted by the Space Needle Corporation for exterior lighting,
including the beam of light at the top of the structure. As you may be
aware, the original application was for the beam of light to be activated
for as many as 70 times per year. The Space Needle Corporation, by letter
dated December 13, 1999, has now withdrawn that application for the beam for
70 times per year and has instead, indicated to the Landmarks Preservation
Board staff that the beam will only be activated for the evenings of the
following dates: December 31, 1999, January 1, 2000 and January 2, 2000.
Because of this change to the application, we have made a determination that
the beam for those three evenings only does not require a Certificate of
Approval from the Landmarks Preservation Board pursuant to terms of the
Controls and Incentives Agreement signed by the City Historic Preservation
Officer and the Space Needle Corporation which was ratified by the Landmarks
Preservation Board and the Seattle City Council.

The Space Needle Corporation has indicated that after the three-day display,
the use of the beam will be re-evaluated and if another application is
submitted, we will notify you when the Board considers a Certificate of
Approval application.

Any individual is certainly welcome to attend the December 15, 1999 meeting
of the Landmarks Preservation Board; however, there will be no discussion or
public testimony taken regarding the beam, only discussion and testimony
relating to the application now before the Board which only includes
lighting of the structure itself.

If you have any questions, please respond to this e-mail and someone will
respond to you.
