This was used on a space-borne telescope. I don't remember the exact science
involved, but I believe it was investigating the spectrum (maybe UV) in the
tail of Halley's comet. The name of the mission was SPARTAN Halley.
Unfortunately, it met a fiery end as it was aboard the Space Shuttle
Challenger in 1986. 

I can say with some confidence that the knife edge effect worked. The
instrument was tested and calibrated and met the principle investigators
specs. May not work well for visual, dunno.

I suppose that a KE can be modeled as a cylinder with a very small radius.
