I have been looking at this too.

B&Q Warehouse have wardrobe (closet) rails in all sorts of lengths and
finishes that come in around the ½ to ¾ inch mark. They also have TV aerial
masts (which I think I will go for) in aluminium in 1.5 and 2 metre lengths
at around an inch or so in diameter. These can be pricey however at around
£7.50 a time, so it would depend on how many you wanted.

Worth looking at though.
