Kurt: 
        I tried this too, and got the same result. I have not found it
necessary to bevel the edges of the tiles. I use them as they come from
the store. I tried to bevel the tiles I had broken into smaller pieces
for the edges of the tool, but like you found it not possible with a
sander or grinder. So I use them, sharp edges and all, and have had no
trouble.
